본문내용
This paper provides a fundamental historical background of the Common school reform period in the nineteenth century and a brief interpretation of three cartoons from Thomas Nast in the 1870s. From this, I review Common school reform from early 1800s to 1870s.
I will first present the basic concepts and philosophies of the common or public school and some of the people responsible for the development of this concept and philosophies. Because of his widespread affect, there will be a particular focus on the influential educational reformer Horace Mann. I will also examine the social change and resulting conflicts which arise during the time of the common school’s development. In large part many of these conflicts were due to an increase in immigration to the U.S and the resistance of the mainly white, European based, Protestant “Native” population to difference value and views particularly concerning education and religion. Finally, I will offer a limited examination of some work of Thomas Nast, a famous 19th century cartoonist, who used his skills to help politics some of the issuer related to the social and educational environment. My review of three of his cartoons will show how he represents some of the best ideals of the common school movement and some of the worst.
