한국어 초록

法華寺十一面觀音菩薩像은 높이 100cm의 입상으로 한그루 의 비자나무(榧)로 된 9세기 檀像풍의 일목조상으로 알려져 있다. 본 상에서 특징적인 것은 얇은 동판을 잘라서 鬢髮과 垂髮이 바람에 나부끼는 것같이 표현된 점인데, 마치 이와 대 응하는 것처럼 바람에 펄럭이며 뒤집힌 천의의 끝단 표현도 훌륭한 조각 기법으로 완성되어 주목된다. 이와 같은 이른바 風動表現에 관해서는 중국 당대 화가 吳道玄의 화풍을 답습 한 결과라고 한 井上正의 견해가 정착되었다. 그런데 본 상에 관해서는 지금까지 光明皇后연고인 東大 寺아미타당에 안치된 檀像十一面觀音像(현존하지 않음), 혹 은 紫微中臺十一面悔過所의 畵像本尊(현존하지 않음)의 模刻 이라고 하는 견해가 제기되었다. 원래 光明皇后의 십일면관음 신앙은 아미타신앙과 결합한 신앙으로, 8세기에 제작된 東大 寺아미타당상이나 紫微中臺畵像本尊도 황후의 아미타신앙 과 밀접하게 관련하고 있으며 陀羅尼集經에서 말하는 阿彌 陀佛輪印法과 같은 수행법인 同經에 게재된 掐數珠印제11을 수행하기 위해 만들었다고 생각된다. 그렇다고 한다면 法華寺 像에서 보이는 吳道玄풍의 풍동표현이나 未開敷蓮華등을 조 형화 한 광배는, 아마타불의 극락정토에 서있는 십일면관음을 표현하기 위해 고안되었다고 생각되는데, 光明皇后에 얽힌 설 화에 물든 法華寺像도 황후의 십일면관음신앙의 계보를 잇는 상으로 원래는 法華寺아미타정토원 금당에 모셨다고 하는 선행연구는 타당하다고 생각한다. 또한 法華寺像의 풍동표현 이나 광배 장식은 光明皇后의 십일면관음신앙의 성격을 전해 주고 있다고 보이기 때문에 이와 같은 특수한 표현은 紫微中 臺畵像本尊등에서 이미 채용된 표현을 法華寺像이 답습한 결과로 생각된다. 그러므로 예전부터 추정된 것처럼 法華寺像 은 여전히 光明皇后연고의 십일면관음상의 모각이었을 개연 성이 높다.

영어 초록

The standing statue of eleven-headed Avalokiteshvara of Hokke-ji (法華寺), which is 100cm high is known as the one-wooden sculpture of danzō-style (檀像様) made of a piece of kaya (榧, Japanese Torreya) in the 9th century. The characteristic feature of this work is that hair made of the thin copper plate is expressed as if it is fluttering in the wind. The beautiful expression of the tip of the heavenly clothes blowing in the wind that seems to correspond to the hair also draws attention. As for the so-called the representation of movement by the wind (風 動表現), Inoue’s argument that it was the result of following the painting style of Wu Daoxuan (吳道玄) who is a painter of Tang China is widely accepted. However, scholars have suggested so far that the work was the imitation of either of Sandalwood statue of eleven-headed Avalokiteshvara (檀像十一面觀音像) enshrined at Todai-ji Amidado hall (東大寺阿弥陀堂) or the central figure of the painting (畵像本尊) of Shibichudai Ekadasamukha (紫微中臺十一面悔過所), which are not extant today. The eleven-headed Avalokiteshvara faith of Empress Kōmiyoukougou (光明皇后) combined initially with Amitabha faith. These two images made in the eighth century are also closely related to the Amitabha faith of the Empress. They seem to be produced to practice the 11th karamālā(掐數珠印第十一) in Daranijikkyou (陀羅尼集 經, Skt. Dhāraṇīsamuccaya), which is the same practice of Amitabha Mudra (阿彌陀佛輪印法) in the sutra. If this is true, the wind expression of Wu Daoxuan style, or the mandola made in the form of lotus bud (未開 敷蓮華) is supposed to be designed to represent Avalokiteshvara standing in Amitabha Pure Land. Therefore, the previous scholarship that considers the statue of Hoke-ji, which is affected by the story of Empress Kōmiyoukougou to continue the tradition of the eleven-headed Avalokitesvara faith of the Empress, and that considers initially to be enshrined at Kondo hall of Amida Jodo-in in Hokke-ji is reasonable. Besides, because the wind expression and the mandola design of the Hoke-ji statue show the characteristic of the eleven-headed Avalokitesvara faith of the Empress Kōmiyoukougou, these unique expressions are considered to be the result of the imitating style that already applied to the central figure of Shibichudai Ekadasamukha. Therefore, as the previous scholars have assumed it is probable that the Hoke-ji image was still an imitation of the eleven-headed Avalokiteshvara statue related to the Empress.
