과학지식 생산과 기술정책 수립에 있어서 여성의 실질적 기여는 그동안
인정받지 못해왔다. 하지만 최근 몇 십 년 동안 과학민주화에 대한 논의와 더불어,
일반시민의 전문성에 대한 새로운 시각이 과학비평가들에 의해 제기되고 있다. 이
글은 여성의 실용적이고 지역적인 지식이 소위 ‘토착지식’으로 폄하되어 여성이 전
문적인 지식생산자로 대우받지 못하고 홀대 받아왔음을 비판하고자 한다.
여성의 농업지식이 생물다양성의 보존과 이용에 핵심적임에도 불구하고 인정받지
못했던 것은, 과학에도 작동하는 젠더정치학 때문이다. 여성의 지역적 지식을 자연
적, 토착적인 것으로 폄하하고 그 생태적 가치와 지역적 권리를 박탈했던 근원과
기작은, 반다나 시바가 주장했듯이 지적 재산권 체제로 인한, 지식과 생물다양성의
사유화다. 식물 종자 보존 및 식량 관리 전문가로서의 여성, 즉 생물다양성 생산자
로서의 여성과 그의 지식을 배제해 온 남성 패권주의적 과학기술과 자연개발방식에
오늘날의 생태위기의 뿌리가 있다는 인식이 에코페미니즘이다.
이 글은 여성의 토착지식과 여성의 전문성에 대한 인정을 바탕으로, 실천적 생태운
동의 가능한 양상을 펼쳐 보이려 한다. 이것은 여성주의 생태론의 두 가지 실천방
향이라고 할 수 있는데, 첫째는 자연과 생명에 대한 관점 및 태도이며 둘째는 음식
에 대한 관점 및 태도이다. 생태지역주의와 새로운 식문화 운동 즉 먹거리운동은
생태여성주의가 실천적 운동으로 확장되는 미래 지평을 보여준다. 여성과 자연, 여
성과 음식의 ‘새로운’ 동맹에 대해 긍정적으로 봄으로써, 여성을 비롯한 소수자와
자연생명, 사물들이 에코페미니즘의 동맹자들로 연결될 수 있고, 그로써 라투르가
말하는 것과 같은 더 강력하게 연결된 ‘행위자 네크워크’가 구축될 수 있을 것이다.

영어 초록

Women’s substantial contribution in the production of scientific knowledge
and the establishment of technology policies has often gone unrecognized.
However, in the recent few decades, a new perspective toward the expertise of
the layperson has been brought to light by critics of science. This paper
attempts to criticize ways in which women’s practical and regional expertise has
been disparaged as ‘indigenous knowledge’, and in which women’s abilities to
serve as professional knowledge-producers have been devalued.
The fact that women’s knowledge in agriculture - which was crucial in
preserving and making use of biodiversity - did not receive a full
acknowledgement it deserves can be attributed to gender politics that is very
much in action in the fields of science. The origin of the belittlement of the
ecological- and regional- values of women’s local knowledge as merely
‘natural’ or ‘indigenous’ kinds can be traced to the system of intellectual
property the contemporary society upheld that brewed privatization of knowledge
and biodiversity as V. Shiva well argued.
It is the system of male-centered science and technology that deterred
opportunities for women to be acknowledged as preservationists of plant seeds,
management professionals of food, or as producers of biodiversity. Several e
eco-feminists state that the male-centered science and technology engendering
male-centric strategies for nature development are the very roots of today’s
ecological crisis.
This paper suggests two new strategies to foster practical ecological movements that are based on acknowledgement and utilization of women’s local
knowledge and expertise: acquiring (1) a new attitude towards nature and life
and (2) a new perspective towards food. Such strategies can be deemed as
potential paths that can be taken by the study of ecofeminism. Effective
eco-localism and food activism may open ways for ecofeminism to expand its
horizon to become more widely accepted and practiced. Via positively reviewing
ways to construct new alliances between women and nature, as well as women
and food, opportunities could be provided for women, fellow minorities, nature,
life, and even things to find linkages to ecofeminism - all of which can
together comprise a strengthened and vitalized ‘actors-network’ as proclaimed by
B. Latour(1987).
