The purpose of this study was to analyze qualities of communication activities in Englishclasses for elementary students. For the study, twenty four video clips of elementary school
teachers` English lessons were collected from the public EBS website and analyzed them based
on the COLT (Communicative Orientation of Language Teaching) observation scheme.
The results were as follows. First, the ratio of the activities has shown that elementary
English teachers used speaking, listening, writing and reading activities in descending order in
their lessons. In particular, students spoke English only for short-answer questions or as a
simple reply to questions, but sustained speeches were barely found.
Second, the students` most commonly used communication activities were phrase repetitions
of teachers’ speech, speaking in short sentences of text units and answering the predictable
questions in the lessons. It implies that students need more meaningful practice in class.
The results of the study revealed that the English proficiency of teachers is important, but
most of the teachers need to provide student-centered communicative activities in a variety
of ways and attempt unpredictable information or information questions to practice
communication skills that are authentic and meaningful to students. Therefore, elementary
students need to communicate in English in more active and creative ways and have more
opportunities to improve their English proficiency.
