In Korea, urbanization and industrialization have improved the nation's socio-economic conditions but have also had a significant impact on the family. While the nature of family problems has diversified, intergenerational conflicts remain to be a major source of stress among modern Korean families. Traditional means of resolving family problems such as Confucian norms have come to play a limited role. Family therapy has recently been introduced as a potential remedy to problems occurring within the family. This paper investigated the applicbility of Bowen's family systems theory to working with families with intergenerational conflicts. It is argued that Western family therapy approaches with are based on mainstream American assumptions of ideal family relationships may not be suitable for application to Korean families. A certain degree of modification is deemed necessary when attempting to apply this family therapy approach to non-Western families. particularly in the use of such concept as differentiation.
A culturally modified family therapy framework can approach problems with an emphasis on integration rather than differentiation of intergenerational relations which will help strengthen intergenerational ties and enhance the functioning of the family as a resource. This modified framework may also be used with individual interventions in providing assessment and intervention in a culturally relevant context.
