Introduction
We may hear cynical remarks such as ‘50s, we are now youth’, ‘Grandpapa Korea’ but we won’t have much time to hear that kind of thing. We will soon meet a second crisis after our financial crisis, the shock of an aging society. We are in a rapidly aging society. According to the definition of an aging society by the United Nations, an aging society exists when the percentage of the population over 65 years old is more than seven percent (Choi, 2007). An aging society means fewer workers will support more retirees, with pensions and healthcare costs rising higher. The ministry of welfare shows that 10 out of 100 people are
65 years or over, and that they make made up 9.5% of the total Korean population in 2006. The percentage of the Korean population 65 years old or over, increased from 3.1% in 1970 to 7.1% in 2000, and is expected to reach approximately 14.0% in 2019 (Korea National Statistical Office, 2007). According to this estimate, Korea will have evolved from an ‘aging society’ to an ‘aged society’ in only 19 years
