External cultural influence on European Renaissance culture and art
본문내용
There were many changes influenced from external culture in Renaissance period. One of big influences is there was a disease in Italy called Black Plague (or black death, bubonic plague) that slaughtered one third of the population. Because so many people have died out, the church changed their attitude toward the culture. They release some restriction of the subjects of artworks, so the artists were able to create some secular paintings. Jan Van Eyck (c. 1390-1441) was the famous artist who invented the Oil painting and developed it in 15th century. Because of its rich and saturated colors, it became possible to express the idealized painting. And the appeal of new pigments such as, Lapis lazuli (Precious gem stone glued), Cochineal (Red), Saffron slide (Yellow), Indigo (Blue), and Verdigris (Green) provided broader variety of colors. And another big influence was the art market. At this time, the easel and canvas were newly provided, so the size of the artworks went to smaller, aiming toward individuals. The artworks were symbolized the wealth, there were people collected famous paintings and sculptures. And some of donors and artist putted themselves in the artworks to show off their fame and wealth. Other than these, there were influences from Greek and Roman culture, Arab culture (Idea of mathematical linear perspective, philosophy, and religion), printing press, and changes in science and astronomy.
