The ‘madness’ that appears in the Wide Sargasso Sea can be divided into two categories. First is a ‘madness’ that can be interpreted as an opposition towards White Supremacy. That is, the whites have described another group of people as ‘madness’ to downgrade its group. In the novel, Bertha cannot belong in the group of white people nor group of natives and then she becomes confused with her identity. In British people’s perspective, Creoles were same as barbarious natives and in the natives’ perspectives, Creoles were people who represented the British which have colonized them for decades and this gave reason for the natives to topple the Creoles. These racial discrimination led Bertha to fail to find her identity. Farewell with Tia also aggravated her situation to find her identity and thus this Bertha’s identity crisis sublimated to ‘madness’.
