본문내용
Paul Broca, a French neurosurgeon, conducted the first study of the brain when he examined a patient who had had an unusual language disorder of the brain in 1861. When Broca autopsied the patient’s brain, he found impairments in the left side of the brain. Broca studied other patients who had the similar language disorder with the first patient, and he found that the patients had lost the ability to speak after injury to the posterior inferior frontal gyrus of the left hemisphere. Patients had trouble with speaking a complete sentence, and they could not express their thoughts in writing. He stated, “We speak with the left hemisphere” and identified the existence of a “language center” in the brain, which is known as Broca’s area.
