At the beginning, as they focus on offering good, reliable service at low fare which meet the need of local traveler. In addition, if we approach environments by Porter`s 5 force analysis model. We may found forces as follows;
Threat of Substitutions
Same price performance of surface transportation such as taxi and train, of course southwest airline is even faster. However, the price of traveling by plane is a bit higher comparing to the other transportations. Moreover, the customer can compare the price and convenient those meet them. For example, for those who have the flexible schedule, preferable to enjoy scenario view, may choose to travel by train.
Competitive of rivalry within the industry
There is no same concept, low cost and short-mid route service rival. Southwest targeted surface transportation as competitors but not other airlines. However, in airline business both low fare airline and high fare that offer to high end market and luxury product. Therefore, Southwest have to compete with closest competitor like United Airline.
