1. Introduction오늘날 우리 인간이 살아가고 있는 환경 중에는 많은 화학물질이 존재하고 있다. 최근내분비장애물질, 일명 환경호르몬(enviroment hormone : Endocrine disruptor chemicals; EDCs)이라고 불리는 물질이 생식과 생육이라고 하는 생물 생존의 기본적 조건에 영향을 미친다는 사실이 밝혀지면서 새로운 환경문제로 세계적 관심이 모아지고 있다.
EDCs이라는 말은 왠지 학문적이고 어려운 이미지를 연상하게 만든다. 사실 이것은 학술용어이지만 일상어에 가깝다고 볼 수 있다. 우리 주변의 ‘환경’에 노출된 화학물질이 몸 안으로 들어와 마치 ‘호르몬’처럼 작용한다는 의미에서 만들어진 합성어일 뿐이다. 그렇다면 ‘호르몬’이란 무엇일까? 호르몬은 아주 적은 양으로 몸의 성장, 생식, 행동을 비롯한 전반적인 생리작용에 영향을 미치는 물질이라고 보면 된다. 예를 들어, 성장호르몬이 부족하면 키가 작아지게 마련이고 성호르몬이 부족하면 정자수가 줄어든다. 사람의 경우 현재까지 알려진 호르몬의 종류는 100여종에 달한다. 호르몬의 분비되는 장소는 뇌, 갑상선, 부갑상선, 흉선, 부신, 췌장, 생식소 등이다. 이처럼 몸의 기능을 조절하는 호르몬의 작용을 방해하는 물질이 있다면 큰일이 아닐 수 없다. 내분비장애물질(EDCs)은 바로 이러한 성질을 가진 물질인 것이다.
