The Hankyoreh newspaper reported that cleaning workers at Yonsei University started protest against restructuring policy on January 16, 2018 (Jung). Several other universities are experiencing cleaning staff restructuring problems at the same time. Cleaning staffs are asking Yonsei university to replace 31 workers who are going to retire at 2017. After minimum wage in South Korea has risen, Yonsei University’s cleaning agency chose to turn its existing full-time position into flexible job in order to cut the cost. They brought in student workers who will work for three-hour periods on behalf of full-time cleaning workers retired. A student said it is “unfair to restructure the cleaning staff because of the minimum wage hike” (Jung). As such, there is a public opinion that universities are unfairly worsening working conditions of cleaning staffs to avoid a slight increase in costs.
I would like to focus on an idea that the gist to solve this problem is coordinating the conflicting interest between the main two parties involved; cleaning staffs and university. From the cleaning staffs’ point of view, they favor better quality of job such as job security and wage, which can be ensured by full-time work position.
