Abstract
Nowadays, most of buildings or constructions are made by a metal frame. As a mechanical engineer, our aim is to design mechanical model safely. So, it is important to understand the process of fracturing of a material. In this experiment, we will perform 3 different types of tensile test to find several properties of a material. First, strain gauge tensile test. We use a weight hanger to apply load to specimen. We obtained 68.9 GPa with 6.32% error. Second, hydraulic tensile test. We use a hydraulic machine to apply load to specimen. It gives Young’s modulus 51.6 GPa with 24.1% error, yield strength 210 MPa with 25% error, and ultimate strength 325 MPa with 0.6% error. Third, plate type tensile test. We use a load nut to apply load. It gives UTS 371.5 MPa with 25.7% error, and % elongation at break 23.8 % with 98.3% error. The third test has relatively large error than others, so it is concluded that the plate type test is not adequate to find property values. The causes of error might be an inaccurate boundary of elastic and plastic region, unbalance of load applying, and usage of trend line of graph.
