1. What is happening in North Korea
On January 1, 2000, human beings celebrated the beginning of the new millennium. While it was one year too early to celebrate the new millennium, the year 2000 marked a time of possibility and uncertainty for all. To North Korea as well, the year 2000 was its chance to have a relationship with the rest of the world. Often considered as the “hermit nation,” North Korea has long held out complete self-reliance as part of its ideology. But came natural disasters and the failure of its collective farming policy, causing widespread famine. While famine all started in 1995 and its ill effects peaked in the late 1990s.
