Theme and symbols are the key devices in “The Handmaid’s Tale”. Various countries are still threatened by terror, including South Korea. However, people are overlooking the threats posed by the government. Margaret Atwood indicates this kind of insecurity and dystopia by themes.
In “The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood”, Offred is a handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian government that has replaced the democratic United States of America. Handmaids are assigned to highly ranked commanders whose wife had trouble conceiving. There is only one consolidated goal for all handmaids which is to bear children.
