A sentence in which some element of the basic version of the sentence is moved into a position of prominence. ex) cleft sentences, sentences with fronting and inversions
1. Form of Cleft Sentences
Cleft sentences, or clefts, are a variation of basic declarative sentences, differing from them in that constituents have been made prominent through changes that include splitting, or “clefting,” the sentence.
(1) a. [He bought] [a small red convertible]. declarative sentences.

b. It was a small red convertible that he bought. it cleft
c. What he bought was a small red convertible. wh-cleft
(2) [He bought] [a small red convertible].

1) It Clefts
It plus some form of be is inserted at the beginning of the sentence and is followed by the part of the sentence that is to be the focused element, which is itself followed by that and the rest of the original sentence.
