According to Article 1A(2) of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees:
“…the term ‘refugee’ shall apply to any person who:…(2) As a result of events occurring before January 1 1951 and because of a well founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country; or is unwilling to return to it.”
Definition of Refugees

From Art 33 No Contracting State shall expel or return a refugee in any manner where his life or freedom would be threatened on account of his race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion.
No State Party shall expel, return or extradite a person to another State where there are substantial grounds for believing that he would be in danger of being subjected to torture.
