The author’s purpose of writing this book is to establish an alternative way of research in social science, covering the weak-points of traditional methods depending mostly on the statistical method. Here we can say that two representative methods exist in social science. Broadly speaking, one is the quantitative (variable-oriented) approach and the other is the qualitative (case-oriented) approach.
One hand, the quantitative (variable-oriented) approach is to yield generalizations regarding relations among variables. It is appropriate for finding causality through analyzing dependent and independent variables. However, it could be exposed to the vulnerability derived from spurious and complex relationships among variables. On the other hand, the qualitative (case-oriented) approach is to comprehend cases in terms of holistic viewpoint. It is suitable to seek for unchangeable patterns through comparing whole cases with each other. Subject to a small number of cases, it can be formulated.
