It is an inarguable fact that colonialism has irreversibly changed the people who have been colonized, long after the colonists had left. But, as Salman Rushdie explores in part in Midnight’s Children, was the shift for the better or worse overall? There are several aspects to consider: would the changes have occurred without colonialism? Is the use of Western ideas best for the country? What are the results of colonialism?
To effectively look at the development of a free country, one need only look at Thailand, the only Southeast Asian country never to be colonized during Imperialism. Today, it is a constitutional monarchy, established in 1932 through a bloodless revolution. Compared to Vietnam, a neighboring country which was colonized by France for almost one hundred years, it has comparable literacy rates and life expectancies. However, Thailand has one third the unemployment rate and three times the GDP per capita of Vietnam (World Fact Book).
