The Effects of the “Korean Wave” on Korea
Since the 1990s, Korean pop cultures have been spread throughout Asia. In 1996, Korean soap operas were exported to China. Many people say that this was the starting point of Korean Wave. 2 years later, Korean pop songs became popular in China, too. Chinese mass media named these phenomena “Korean Wave.” Korean Wave affected not only China, but also Japan and other South-east Asian countries. Inversely, Korean Wave affected Korea in many ways.
First, A cultural products` sales andthe number offoreign tourists coming to Korea increase as Korean Wave spreads more. Korean soap operas, songs and movies have been sold by many foreign buyers at a high costs. Also, foreign tourists traveling Korea increased a lot. 2 million foreigners visited Korea in 2000, but 8.8 million foreigners traveled Korea last year. ributors of Korean economic development as they make a purchase in Korea.
