Governess’s Phantasm in terms of Oppressed Sexual Desire and Heavy Responsibility in The Turn of the Screw by Henry James
For readers, except the first a few pages of the narration of “I” and “Douglas”, Governess’s narration, is the only way to get information how the things going on in Bly. Though this point makes lots of situations and the characters ambiguous, readers can recognize how Governess’s true feeling or thoughts of many odd circumstances in detail. Her narration is very strong, enough to believe the novella as a horror story. She does not hesitate to judge or value all the situation by her own perspective. As story goes on, however, readers would notice that Governess is not perfectly believable narrator. Her Phantasm, the appearance of Peter Quint and Jessel, is not surprising or sudden shock. It has much to do with her oppressed sexual desire to her master, whom she barely met twice. .
