From a criminological point of view, one of the main challenges posed by the dawning of the computing age, and more recently the Internet age, is how best to understand the criminality already to be detected in these fields. More particularly, `cybercrime` is a new category of crime, as it were, one requiring new or different criminological theories, or is it on the other hand easily understood by existing theories?
A second and related question (which has received less attention, but is arguably no less pressing) is the question as to whether cybercrime is intrinsically dynamic in quality, changing in type as new technologies emerge (and consequently requiring new explanatory theories and policing responses), or whether as a type it is fairly settled in nature even if its manifestations may appear varied overtime.
The books reviewed here provide us with an opportunity to reflect on both these questions, as well as to begin to see how imperatives such as the need for technical know-how and the needs of security and policing personnel to implement real-word responses have shaped the early development of academic knowledge about cybercrime.
