Who Are Good Language Learners?
As learning a second language or a foreign language has become one of the most important and demanding tasks for many people, an endeavor to find the key to successful language acquisition spread throughout the world. Especially, lots of researches have been done on the characteristics of good language learners in order to help both learners and teachers. According to the studies, successful learners appeared to share three common characteristics: high self-awareness, willingness, and autonomy.
First, successful language learners are well aware of themselves. They have insight into their own language learning styles and preferences. This is possible as they monitor themselves while and after learning takes place. They try to find what works for them and what does not and try to adapt themselves to various methods and materials that are used when learning. Thus, learners who have high self-awareness are more likely to succeed in learning the language.
Apart from their self-awareness, good language learners are willing to communicate, experiment, and take risks. They are willing to accept uncertainty, vagueness or imperfection and do not worry about making mistakes, because they know that these are
