· Learner autonomy
The concept of learner autonomy stresses that the role of the learner is very important in the classroom. The learner should take a more active role in managing their own learning processes and be able to make connections between what they learned in class and what they know from outside of class. Therefore, top-down learning, in which the learner is a empty vessel waiting for the teacher to provide all the inputs, should be avoided according to the supporters of learner autonomy. Examples of top-down learned would be Audiolingualism, and Situational Language Teaching.
In order to facilitate students’ autonomous learning, teachers need to be a facilitator rather than an instructor. Also, student should be in an environment where they do not rely on teachers as the main source of information. Moreover, students should be encouraged to make own decisions and develop their own learning strategies.
