Abstract
Ophelia in Shakespeare`s Hamlet is his most tragic heroin who falls into madness and eventually drowns herself. Her Madness results from the patriarchal oppression of male characters surrounding her; father, brother and lover. The tragic and romantic aspects of her character made her a popular icon for painters.
Iconographically, Ophelia appears as young and beautiful, but pale-faced lady with a distracted gaze because of her madness. She often wears a white dress which symbols her innocence and sexual purity. She carries a bundle of wild flowers or wears a garland made of flowers and straws. She is often depicted by the stream sitting on a branch or floating in the water owing to her drowning.
Some neoclassical and Victorian painters represented her an idealized woman to deliver the notions of the ideal womanhood and to epitomize the lady-like decorum of the period. On the other hand, the romantic painters enjoyed expressing her emotional and dramatic mentality in her madness. These painters often drew her bare-breasted to indicate her sensuality and eroticism which were oppressed during her sanity. Some paintings depicting her madness and death would contribute to disperse the misogynistic ideology in which madness and suicide are considered as characteristics of unhealthy and sentimental femininity.
Shakespeare`s Ophelia is a very mystic and ambiguous character which results in the fertility of her visual images. We cannot deny that many of these images are distorted according to male desire and anxiety about woman, However we have to
give our attention to the fact that she cannot be presented merely one-dimensionally. Ophelia herself speaks against the harsh patriarchal ideology regardless of the way in which she is represented. She has a cultural immortality to live new lives by being interpreted or evaluated differently according to the different times.
