Looking back to my school days, I can remember that our Korean teachers emphasized the supremacy of standard Korean under the name of national unity. In this situation, we thought naturally that standard Korean is the norm we have to follow, and the other dialects are vulgar. Most people who spoke standard Korean thought that speaking one of the Korean dialects was ridiculous and even looked down on dialect users. However, this trend has been changed. Whether it is due to the descriptive approach in the field of modern linguistics, now we value all of the dialects as they are. For example, we can easily observe that 5th graders in elementary school learn different Korean dialects and some advantages of using them as well. When we change our focus a little bit on English, we come to face the problem of using and teaching Standard English whatever it is. As English teachers-to-be, we need to think of this issue: Under what basis do we need to teach English grammar?
