The purpose of this study is to discover the effects of depression anddrinking on suicidal thought among the elderly and the moderating
effect of drinking between depression and suicidal thought to present
intervention strategies. This study used data from the 2014 National
Survey on the Elderly and the 10,279 elderly who responded
themselves were analyzed. The results of this study are as follows:
Participants of this study were 58.2% female and 41.8% male. The
mean of depression was 5.38 and 33.1% of the participants were
above the cut-off score, which can be diagnosed as depression. The
majority of participants, 72.4% were non-drinkers and 6.2% were
daily drinkers. The average amount of drinking was 1.18 and 10.9%
of participants presented suicidal thought. This study found that
suicidal thought was significantly different by gender, having a
spouse or not, and depression but was not significantly different by
frequency and amount of drinking. The age and having a spouse or
not had a significant effect on suicidal thought. It was found that the
frequency and the amount of drinking had a moderating effect
between depression and suicidal thoughts significantly. But the
frequency of drinking did not affect suicidal thoughts. The
implications and practical intervention strategies were recommended
based on these results.
