한국어 초록

최근 심리철학과 인지과학 분야에서 마음에 대한 전통적 접근이 갖는 문
제를 극복하고 인지, 정서, 행동을 새롭게 이해할 수 있는 연구 프로그램이 활발
히 논의되고 있다. 그 연구 프로그램은 여러 가지 이름으로 불리고 있는데 그 중
가장 널리 사용되는 것은 체화된 마음 이론(embodied mind theory)이다. 그 명칭
아래에 포섭되는 이론들은 세부적 내용에서 상충하는 면도 있지만 공통적으로 전통
적 접근의 핵심 주장, 즉 인지 또는 마음이 뇌만의 작용이라든가 뇌 안에 있다는
점을 부정한다. 확장된 마음 이론(theory of extended mind)은 체화된 마음 연구
프로그램에 속하는 것으로서 인지 또는 마음은 뇌의 한계를 벗어나 몸과 환경적
요소로 확장될 수 있다고 주장한다.
이 글의 목표는 확장된 마음 이론이 제기하는 대표적 쟁점들을 체화된 연구 프로
그램에 속하는 다른 이론들과의 비교를 통해 검토하는 데 있다. 먼저 2절은 클락과
찰머스(Clark and Chalmers)가 제시한 예와 동등성원리를 통해 확장된 인지 이론을
분석하고 그 이후의 절들은 확장된 마음 이론이 제기하는 주요한 네 가지 쟁점들
을 다룰 것이다. 3절은 마음의 확장을 존재론적 구성과 존재론적 의존에 초점을 맞
추어 확장된 마음 이론은 전자, 착근된 마음 이론은 후자를 강조한다는 점을 주장
할 것이다. 4절은 확장의 주체가 인지를 넘어 마음에도 적용되는지를 다루고 아울
러 기능주의가 확장된 마음 이론을 함축하는지를 검토한다. 5절은 인지의 분산가능
성을 인정하면서도 마음의 분산가능성을 주정하는 기어리(Giere)의 견해를 통해 확
장된 마음과 분산된 인지를 비교 검토한다.

영어 초록

Recently, a new research programme is under active discussion in the field
of philosophy of mind and cognitive science which can overcome the problems
of the traditional approach to the mind and suggest a new perspective to
cognition, emotion, and behavior. The programme is now known as various
names, of which the most comprehensive one is the embodied mind theory.
The theories subsumed under the umbrella of embodied mind theory can collide
over detail contents but have a common critical attitude against the basic tenet
of the traditional view that cognition and mind are the function of the brain
only, or they are in the brain only. The extended mind theory, as a sub-theory
of the programme, contends that cognition and/or mind can extend beyond the
boundary of the brain and skin to environmental objects.
The purpose of this paper is to examine some fundamental issues that the
extended mind theory has brought about, and to discuss them by making a
comparison with other theories belong to the programme. Firstly, section two
examines the extended mind theory by focusing the examples and the parity
principle, whereafter there will be sections to discuss those issues related the
extended mind theory. Section three analyzes the extended mind theory in two
aspects, ontological constitution and ontological dependency, and explicates the
extended mind theory as an example of the former and the embedded mind
theory as the latter. Section four deals with the subject of extending, whether it
is cognition only or the mind too, and with which problems occurred when we
accept the view that functionalism implies the extended mind theory. Section
five compares the extended mind and the distributed mind through discussing
Giere’s view that does not accept the distribution of the mind, but of cognition
only.
