The aim of this study is to make clear the perspective of multi-cultural education
which is reflected in social studies curriculum and practice in Japan. The results are as follows.
First, as for the goal and contents of social studies, there co-exists the perspective of multicultural
education respecting commonness and diversity as the people such as the understanding
of the Japanese tradition and culture and nurturing of patriotism, but there was a tendency to
place emphasis on the former. Second, it was found that teachers’understanding and concern for
multi-cultural education are high but the perspective of multi-cultural education in practice was
insufficient because children’s cultural properties weren’t reflected in teaching contents and
method. On the other hand, some classes were seeking for problem-solving schemes by inducing
students to perceive an issue from a diverse perspective and to be at a position of others, etc.
Such a class was suggesting good implications to the method of reflecting the perspective of multi-cultural education in social studies class in that such a class is conducted with an emphasis
on nurturing a multifaceted perspective of students.
