본 연구의 목적은 한국 원격교육상황에서 컴퓨터 통신의 활용 환경이 어떠한가를 다양한 측면에서 살펴보고, 컴퓨터 통신망의 활용 형태를 사회 심리적 상호작용 지원, 교수- 학습 지원, 정보제공, 그리고 상담지도의 네가지 기능별로 분석하고자 함이었다. 컴퓨터 저장자료 분석, 텔레리서치, 인터뷰 등을 통한 연구 결과, 전반적으로 방송대학의 컴퓨터 통신망 이용자수와 이용 시간이 꾸준히 증가하고 있음이 파악되었다. 또한 컴퓨터 통신은 학생간의 사회, 심리적 交流를 지원하는 機能을 담당하고 있으며, 아울러 교수- 학습 지원체제로서의 가능성을 보이고 있었다. 그러나 컴퓨터 통신이 정보제공과 상담지도 지원에 적극 활용될 수 있음에도 불구하고, 실제로는 활용 부족의 현상을 보였으며 그 원인으로는 정보 제공자의 부족과 운영 체제 미흡등이 지적되었다.

영어 초록

This study is an attempt to analyze user environment and usage patterns of computer network in dist an ce education sy st em and to explore possibilities of computer - mediated communication in supporting students of the Korea National Open University. Fourareas in which computer network can play supportive roles for distance education students are investigated : social and intellectual two- way communication, teaching and learning support, database utilization and counselling services. Computer - recorded data analysis, tele- surv ey , and network intervieware used to collect the data for the study. The results of the data an alyses show the following findings.1) Total connection time and total usuage numbers are increasing every year. Also, network u sage pattern appears to be stabilized in terms of duration of usage and number of real users.2) It is proved that computer network has played a supportive role of activating interation between students.3) Computer network appears to support students' learning by providing relevant instructional materials and allowing students' interaction with peers con cerning course- related matters.4) It is identified that students demand updated information related to course description, academic affairs and study skills. Recent computer network has not provided enough information to the students.5) Less than 20% of the total users have used coun selling services provided through computer network. Based on these findings, several suggestions for improving quality of student supporting services provided through computer network are listed.
