3 Differneces between VP-Ellipsis and V-deletion
1. Gapping can only in coordinate sentences, On the contrary, VP-Ellipsis is equally grammatical in either coordinate or subordinate sentences. In coordinate sentences, two clauses with parallel grammatical structure are conjoined.
* VP-deletion
- Violet will stay out late tonight, even though she shouldn't [-]. [subordinate clause]
- Violet will stay out late tonight, and she shouldn't [-]. [coordinate clause]

2. With VP-Ellipsis at least one auxiliary verb must be "left behind". If there is no auxiliary verb as in (61), the sentence is ungrammatical. However, when the verb is omitted in Gapping construction, all auxiliary verbs must be omitted. The presence of an auxiliary verb makes the whole sentence ungrammatical as in (62).
