본문내용
Korea is very famous for its hyper-competitive educational system. It is Korea that everybody cares about and gets interested in education. More importantly, people have a lot to say and they have all become professional when it comes to English education. Recently, there has been a fierce on-going debate over the incoming governments reform plan for English education. According to the government transition committee, the new government will implement an English immersion program and hire more teachers in public schools. In other words, the government is trying to completely change the current curricula which seem to malfunction and thus make people confused. I believe that the government really needs to slow down in pushing for the plan and come up with a more practical and realistic approach. I would like to point out the three main absurd and unrealistic ideas in the reform plan : teachers, budgeting, and students.
First of all, there are some doubts about how the government will hire a lot of capable teachers for the immersion program. The government suggested the skill-based teacher recruitment plan which on the surface appears unworkable. For example, anyone who has completed TESOL program or native-like speaking students who have studied abroad can be an English teacher in the public schools. However, the school is not only the place teachers convey knowledge to students but also the place students get influenced by teachers by the way teachers behave or think in general. That is to say that teaching English at school requires not only language fluency, but also an art of teaching and disciplinary knowledge.
