For most of students who study foreign languages, listening and speaking would be the toughest parts to deal with. Thinking back of my middle school or high school periods, I don’t have much memories of practicing listening or speaking in the classes. Since grammar-based teaching method had been leading English classes for quite a long time to prepare students for tests, communicative abilities was not the first priority in Korea. CLT methodology had brought quite big changes in those aspects. Many of textbook are written based on CLT, and actual classes are also getting more interactive gradually. It seems like CLT methodology in Korea - especially for elementary school and middle school - is in the saddle now; I actually had troubles of finding problematic parts from a middle school textbook. I, of course, know that good textbooks don’t guarantee good lessons. How to use them in actual classes is totally different story. One thing for sure, however, is that students these days would be able to practice communicative skills easily and naturally than before.
