Cytokines은 immune response를 조절하기 위해 white blood cells에서 분비되는 protein molecules이다. Th1 and Th2 cytokines immune response 동안 일어나는 서로 다른 function에 의거하여 붙여진 이름이다. Th1 cytokines은 일반적으로 cell-mediated immunity(responses to intracellular pathogens that involve activation of cells such as cytokine T cells and natural killer cells)를 조절하며, interleukin-2(IL-2), tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF-α), and interferon-gamma(IFN-γ)와 같은 molecule들을 포함한다. 반대로, Th2 cytokines은 humoral immunity(responses to extracellular pathogens that involve activation of B cells and antibody production)를 조절하는 중요한 역할을 하고 있으며, IL-4, IL-5, IL-9, IL-10, IL-13와 같은 molecules을 포함한다.
Stress는 humoral immunity를 포함한 immune system에 있어 전반적으로 suppressive effects를 야기하며, lymphocytes의 proliferation과 naturally killer cells의 functioning(cytotoxicity)을 감소시킨다. Immune system의 functioning diminish는 chronically stresse에 있어서 감염성, 종양성 발병 확률을 증가시키게 된다.
