The story “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemmingway shows that men
and women are essentially distinct and it is hard for the two to communicate. The story
describes the landscape around the station which is between Barcelona and Madrid. The
tracks of the station separate two opposite worlds. There is desolate moorland on one
side, and, there are trees and an abundance of grain plants along the river on the other
side. Most of the story is based on the dialogue about miscarriage on the patio of a pub
between two protagonists (an American man and a girl named Jig). The scenes and
conversations express not only the conflicts between the two of them but also the
dialogue is a representation of the problems between men and women by and large.
One of the main characters, the man, is double-faced. This is evident from the
handout, “I’ll go with you and I’ll stay with you all the time. They just let the air in and
then it’s all perfectly natural.” (621). He seems to care for the girl, but he sticks to his
opinion that she should have an abortion.
