INTRODUCTION
Women`s role in management is an important issue. This is based not just on moral, but also on economic grounds. In many countries female participation rates in labor markets have increased as well as in Korea. For example, Hanjin Shipping Co., Asia`s fourth-largest container shipping line, has hired 25 new graduates this year, and 15 of them, or 60 percent, are women. Last year, only 47 percent of the company`s new employees were women.
Women usually constitute around 20 percent of the workforce in shipping firms, but an official with Hanjin said that recent developments are not part of any special company policy. The official said that they just selected the top 25 candidates, and the majority turned out to be female. And he added that in the labor market overall; there are a lot of talented women. Another Hanjin official said Cho Soo-ho, Hanjin`s president, asks his executives to pay less attention to gender and focus more on their qualifications, and the same philosophy is applied when considering promotions.
For another instance, LG Electronics Inc., which is trying to have a workforce that is also at least 20 percent female, offered jobs to 350 women, or 17.5 percent, out of 2,000 new workers hired in the first half of the year, an increase of almost 10-percentage points over 2003.
Though there exists these kind of desirable cases in society, a similar expansion into managerial posts has commonly lagged behind this, often an indication of the resilience of the so-called `glass ceiling`. We review occupational segregation , wage discrimination with comparison of womens’ status among OECD countries . Through this, we go on to outline some possible ways to confront female managerial discrimination and to increase women`s roles in management.
