Objectives
Mechanical devices are often impacted, so it is very important to know mechanical properties of a material. The purpose of the charpy test is to investigate how much material is ductile or brittle. In this experiment, firstly we will drop the pendulum and make the specimen fractured. Then we will measure the impact energy and check the fracture surface using ImageJ software.
Theory
In this experiment, we will use a pendulum to impact the specimen and measure kinetic energy. Once a pendulum is raised, it stores potential energy as it goes higher. After a pendulum is dropped, total energy is changed from potential energy to kinetic energy. The kinetic energy K is obtained by the difference of potential energy between the initial and final states:
