Objectives
Mechanical design requires engineers to be able to select materials appropriate for each situation. Metallurgical microscopy tests allow us to observe the microstructure of the material and understand the changes in material properties due to heat treatment. In this experiment, we learn sample preparation techniques in metallography and study the microstructures of typical alloys. In many industries, they usually deal with high-intensity and weight-lightening of material. Therefore, material studies should be preceded for the development of mechanical components. Finally, we would understand the properties of materials with the microstructure.
Theory
According to the temperature and carbon composition, carbon steel shows various phase. By using the phase diagram in Fig 1, we can estimate the phase of carbon steel.

To observe the surface of material accurately, polishing and etching process are need to be proceeded.
