Compliment is necessary ‘tool’ when you want to communicate with others smoothly. Also, compliment is positive speech act. Because it makes people feel good and acknowledged by someone. However, the responses to compliment are various by different cultures and people. Some people accept the compliment directly and some are not. Also, some people reject the compliment although it is good compliment. However, rejection of compliment may not real rejection in some culture. What makes the differences in response to the compliment? It may depend on situation, culture and complicated act that hard to explain.
In next chapter, our group members analyze report about the responses to compliment by three different speakers respectively; Chinese, Australian English and Korean speaker. These three speakers almost show different responses to even same compliment. This would be the good chance to know difference of each other’s culture specifically in response to compliment.
