Physical health is a recurring topic in today’s society; more and more people are leading sedentary lives, and the occurrences of diseases with links to unhealthy lifestyles are on the rise. Many factors contribute to this trend of spending more time away from physical activity, but according to recent studies, many of these factors may be insignificant in comparison with one, previously untested factor: genetics. Do the genes we inherit play a significant role in our drive to exercise? In short, yes. A recent study, “A Twin-Sibling Study on the Relationship between Exercise Attitudes and Exercise Behavior” (Huppertz 2013), implies that genes play a significant role in the relationship between exercise attitudes and exercise behavior: “the desire to be active or indolent is, to some extent, inherited.”
In a related study, researchers used rats in an attempt to determine a correlation between exercise and genetics.
