I. IntroductionHanjin Group and its business
Once the 7th world largest shipping company and South Korea’s leading one, Hanjin Shipping was founded in 1977 by Hanjin Group founder Mr. Cho Choong-Hoon, who decided to create a container line subsidiary under his conglomerate.
The company had held around 2.9% of global market share in the shipping industry, with 97 ships in its fleet covering all major routes around the world, in particular in the Pacific Ocean.
The company filed for bankruptcy in August 2016, after it had been struggling to repay its enormous amount of debt. Because of its large implications on the global shipping industry,
Hanjin’s failure has been defined by many as the “Lehmann Brothers of Shipping” or the biggest collapse in the history of the industry: the bankruptcy of South Korean shipping company has cost over $10 billion to creditors (source: Global Trade).
One of the biggest conglomerate in South Korea, the Hanjin Group is an example of “Chaebol”, which in Korean means “family business” or “monopoly”.
