본문내용
This paper discusses functions of auxiliary system in English. The main function of auxiliaries is to help main verbs. In English, auxiliaries are closely associated with main verbs. When auxiliary verbs add new meanings to main verbs, the main verbs experience semantic or morphologic changes. Auxiliary verbs have several features as follows: (1) Auxiliaries do not appear independently – they always occur with main verbs, and are posited before the main verbs. Homer is studying syntax. (2) Modals are included in a domain of auxiliaries. (3) Auxiliaries allow inversion in various cases and occur at the beginning of sentences.<중 략>
Through analysis of lexical entries of (a) and (b), Falk (2008) argues that the auxiliary did, in the sentence (b), is merely an analytic expression of the tense feature and believes that (b) is ungrammatical unless did is stressed. However, in (c), auxiliary did correctly supports the main verb take and it is inverted in (d). From this analysis, we can discover that auxiliary do occurs in negative, interrogative, and declarative statements when it is stressed.
