CHAPTER 15 Indirect Objects
SENTENCES WITH INDIRECT OBJECTS: TWO PATTERNS
The Prepositional and Dative Movement Patterns
In the prepositional pattern, the indirect object occurs after the direct object and is preceded by a preposition. In the dative movement pattern, the indirect object occurs before the direct object.
Prepositional Pattern
In sentences such as a, the direct object is the thing that undergoes the action and the indirect object is the person or other animate being toward whom the action is directed. The direct object is the theme and the indirect object is the goal.
DO IO
a. I gave [a book] to [John].
A large number of verbs, such as bring, give, send, tell, and throw, take indirect objects preceded by to. They are usually called to dative verbs.
