Symbols in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Many critics consider Adventures of Huckleberry Finn a milestone of modern American literature. In the novel, Mark Twain writes about people and places that the protagonist, Huck Finn, visits during his journey along the Mississippi River. Through elaborate use of literary devices and settings, Twain grafts his social ideology onto the protagonist, Huckleberry Finn, to convey his message to the novel’s mid-nineteenth century readers. Twain sets up various symbolic people and places, and portrays them through the perspective of a young, uneducated, superstitious boy, which enables the novel to become one of the most influential American novels in history. Throughout the novel, Twain shows the difficulty of altering one’s life, criticizes mid-nineteenth century American people’s attitude toward white supremacy, and satirizes American aristocratic families by the use of many elaborately planned symbolic figures.
