Master of Satire
Mark Twain’s masterpiece, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn had presented a new direction for the American literature. It effectively criticizes the falsehood of religion and aristocracy by freely using colloquial language and southern dialect. It seems like an adventure story full of romance and hope. However, it includes social and moral criticism that could not be excluded to understand the 19th century America. The main theme of the book is ‘sivilization’ which represents hypocrisy and restriction. The civilization stained with falsehood and violence is seen through Huck’s innocent eyes. As Huck travels he doubts and challenges his previous values about slavery and perceives the dignity of every man. By showing irrationality and the tragedy accompanied with the irrrationality, Twain satirizes the aristocracy, religion, and the cruelty of men.
Twain effectively manipulates the story of the dauphin and the Duke and the Grangarfords to show the absurdity of the aristocracy
Huck not only is creating his ego but also creating desirable and healthy model of human. He cannot withstand watching a slave being sold and is very sympathetic. Like this, by looking through the eyes of natural innocent boy, readers are able to see how the ‘sivilized’me of religion, and creates cruel crowd. Viewing with no bias makes all these observations possible. The reason why Huck not Tom is a main character is the above. Huck can discriminate false from hypocrisy. The satire throughout the book is a reflection of undesirable circumstances in the reality. Wasn’t Twain trying to present a model for righteous human beings and society?
