Classification of Conceptual Metaphor
It is assumed that the language universals of metaphor lie in the conceptual metaphors. These conceptual metaphors, which have undergone long historical change and have been accepted through common practice, have become the integrated parts of our conceptual systems. According to Lakoff & Johnson, conceptual metaphor can be generally classified into three categories. They are structural metaphors, orientational metaphors and ontological metaphors.
1 Structural Metaphor
Structural metaphor refers to those cases there one concept is metaphorically structured in terms of another (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980). It is the main mechanism through which people comprehend abstract concepts and perform abstract performing. According to Lakoff & Johnson and other scholars’ opinion, the meaning of metaphor is decided by the meaning and structural features of the source domain. In the process of comprehending metaphors, the structure of the source domain maps systematically onto the target domain, and becomes one of the parts in the structure of the target domain. Such kind of metaphors is very common.
