First consonant shift ( first sound change)
Grimm's law : 발음과 자음의 변화 규칙
정의 : 1822년 독일의 언어학자 Jacob Grim이 Germanic어의 일정한 자음들과 Sanskrit, Greek, 그리고 Latin에서 발견된 자음들 사이의 일치점을 체계적으로 설명함.
→ Latin과 Greek 등에 보존되어 있는 Indo-European(Latin)어의 P는 Germanic(영 어)에서는 f로 변했다는 것이다. 즉 원래의 무성폐쇄음(p, t, k)은 마찰음인 (f, ,h) 로 변했다. 같은 언어에서 발전되어 나온 동족어(cognates)에서 우리는 음의 대응을 엿볼 수 있고 이로부터 음의 변화를 추출할 수 있다.
