This text considers “Cultural formation theory” revealed in East-West Culture and Philosophy, one of the early works by Liang Shu Ming, and its limits. He explained creation process of culture through two concepts, ‘will’ and ‘life’, analyzed characteristics of Western, Chinese, and Indian cultures by ‘The Three Roads to Culture’, and demonstrated the value of Chinese culture through the theory called ‘Cultural Precocity’. But, it is detectable that there is an inherent contradiction in the process like this. What he proposed through ‘The Three Roads to Culture’ was taking positions of ‘culture relativism’ and ‘cultural pluralism’; on the contrary, the theory of ‘Cultural precocity’ was for ‘cultural absolutism’ and ‘culture monism’. The reason why there exists inconsistency in the cultural view of Liang Shu Ming is that he kept trying to argue the value of ‘Confucian Culture’ and to find a way so that it could take a leading position in modern society, which was the purpose of his study on the problems of cultures in the Eastern and Western worlds. It might be too much to expect him to have an objective stance on studying cultural problems, as he had a strong faith in the ‘Confucian Culture’.
