Osmosis is a net movement of water molecules through a semipermeable membrane from an area of higher water potential to an area of lower water potential. Osmosis is crucial not only for humans as it stabilizes the internal environment of cells, but also for plants because water moves into plant cells by osmosis so that plants can gain water which is very essential for photosynthesis. However, too low or high rate of osmosis can cause serious problems for plant cells. If plant cells lose too much water by osmosis, they will become less rigid and eventually the cell membrane will shrink away from the cell wall, causing the plant to wilt. Conversely, if too much water enters into cells by osmosis, the membrane can swell up and burst. Thus, finding out the favorable condition that the optimal rate of osmosis can occur (which does not create too low or much water entering into cells) and discovering the method to maximize the activity of osmosis were considered to be very significant.
