The understanding of the unit is a key point in the development of the concept of length. Theunderstanding of unit is necessary for measuring as well as for comparing indirectly by using unititeration. This article describes a study that investigated the use of units by children when they werecomparing lines indirectly. The correlations between different aspects of the use of units are examined:the understanding of units, the use of units for decomposing and for counting are investigated.
